How to Choose the Right Green Cardamom Grade for Your Business
Not every green cardamom buyer needs the biggest pod. Here’s what actually matters when choosing a grade.

When you first start buying green cardamom, the different sizes can be confusing.
6mm. 7mm. 8mm. 9mm. Bold. Super Bold. Premium.
At first, it can feel like bigger automatically means better.
But that's not really how it works.
A restaurant making hundreds of cups of tea every day may have completely different requirements from a premium sweet manufacturer or an importer looking for visually impressive cardamom pods.
The right grade depends on what you are using it for, what your customers expect, and how much you're willing to spend.
At Greenwick Globals, we work with different grades of Indian green cardamom, and one of the questions we hear often is:
“Which size should I buy?”
So, let's make it simple.

First, what does the “mm” actually mean?
The number refers to the approximate size of the cardamom pod.
For example, 7mm cardamom is generally smaller than 8mm cardamom.
You may come across grades such as:
5.5–6mm
6–7mm
7–8mm
8mm+
9mm bold
The exact grading names can vary between suppliers and markets, so it's always worth checking how a supplier defines a particular grade before comparing prices.
And this is important:
Size is only one part of quality.
Two batches can be similar in size and still look and smell quite different.
So, is bigger cardamom always better?
Not necessarily.
Larger pods are often preferred for their appearance and can command higher prices, particularly in premium markets.
But that doesn't mean a smaller grade is poor quality.
Think about it this way.
If you're making cardamom powder, you may not need to pay extra simply for very large, visually attractive pods.
If you're selling premium whole cardamom in a retail pack, however, appearance can matter much more.
That's why choosing a grade should start with your end use, not just the highest number on the specification sheet.

6–7mm: A practical everyday choice
For businesses that use cardamom regularly, a 6–7mm grade can be a practical option.
It can work well for:
Tea and coffee
Sweets
Desserts
Restaurants
Bakeries
Spice blends
Everyday cooking
It offers a balance between size, aroma, appearance and cost.
For a business buying cardamom in larger quantities, that balance can matter more than simply choosing the biggest pods available.

7–8mm: When appearance starts to matter more
Move up to 7–8mm and you'll generally see larger, more uniform-looking pods.
This is a popular range for buyers looking for a more premium presentation without necessarily moving into the highest-priced grades.
It can be suitable for:
Premium retail packs
Hotels and restaurants
Specialty tea and coffee
Confectionery
Gift packs
Export markets
If the cardamom is going to be seen by the customer, rather than immediately ground or blended, pod appearance becomes more important.

8mm and above: The bold grades
This is where cardamom starts to look noticeably different.
Large, well-formed pods have strong visual appeal, especially when they have good colour, good density and a fresh appearance.
These grades are often used in premium retail and specialty markets where buyers are willing to pay more for a particular presentation and specification.
But here's something worth remembering:
Don't buy 8mm or 9mm simply because someone told you it is “the best.”
Ask yourself:
Will my customer actually benefit from the larger grade?
If the answer is no, you may simply be paying more for a specification you don't need.

What about aroma?
This is where things get more interesting.
Cardamom's value isn't just in the size of the pod. Its characteristic aroma comes from the volatile compounds present in the spice.
So when evaluating a batch, don't look at size alone.
Look at the whole picture:
Colour
Good-looking green cardamom generally has a fresh, attractive appearance. Excessive fading or discolouration can affect how the product is perceived.
Aroma
This is one of the first things an experienced buyer notices.
A good batch should have a noticeable, characteristic cardamom fragrance rather than a stale or flat smell.
Pod condition
Look for pods that are properly formed and reasonably uniform for the grade.
Seeds
When a pod is opened, the seeds should look healthy and have the characteristic aroma of cardamom.
Moisture
Storage and moisture management matter because cardamom can lose quality when handled or stored poorly.
So when you're comparing two suppliers, don't just ask:
“What size is it?”
Also ask:
“What is the quality of the lot?”

Which grade should you choose?
Here's a simple way to think about it:
Your requirement | Grade to consider |
Everyday cooking & commercial use | 6–7mm |
Tea, coffee & regular retail | 6–7mm / 7–8mm |
Premium retail packs | 7–8mm |
Premium whole-pod presentation | 8mm+ |
Specialty / bold-pod markets | 8–9mm |
This isn't a strict rule.
Your ideal grade depends on your product, market and budget.
One mistake buyers often make
Comparing prices without comparing specifications.
A supplier might quote ₹X for “8mm cardamom,” while another quotes a different price for what sounds like the same grade.
Before deciding, ask:
What is the actual size range?
How uniform is the batch?
What is the colour?
How fresh is the lot?
How is it packed?
What is the origin?
What quantity are you buying?
Is the quoted price for the same specification?
A cheaper quote isn't necessarily cheaper if the product doesn't meet the specification your customers expect.

For exporters and wholesalers, consistency matters
If you're buying cardamom for resale, consistency can be just as important as the grade itself.
Imagine you sell a 7–8mm product to your customers.
They expect the next shipment to look reasonably similar to the previous one.
That's why proper sorting, grading, storage and packaging matter throughout the supply chain.
For an importer or spice brand, having a reliable supplier can make purchasing much easier because you aren't starting the quality conversation from scratch with every shipment.

How we approach cardamom at Greenwick Globals
At Greenwick Globals, we don't look at cardamom size in isolation.
We work with different grades based on the requirements of the buyer — whether the requirement is for everyday commercial use, premium retail, food businesses or bulk supply.
The important part is understanding what you're buying and why you're buying it.
A 6–7mm pod can be the right choice for one business.
A 7–8mm pod can make more sense for another.
And a buyer looking specifically for bold premium pods may have completely different requirements.
There isn't one cardamom grade that is “best” for everyone.
There is only the grade that best fits your requirement.
